An insufficient warming-up phase can cause pulled calf muscles fast. In particular, such injuries are not uncommon during sports types requiring abrupt movement such as handball.

As an immediate measure the “RICE rule” should be applied in order to alleviate acute pain and hinder more severe consequences:

  • Rest

  • Ice

  • Compress

  • Elevate

Normally therapy is conservative, i.e. without surgery Stabilising bandages (“supports”) or braces may be necessary here.
